Using Natural Fat Transfer

For centuries, people have tried relentlessly to improve their physical appearance and to look younger. Today modern technology has been able to slow down or correct changes that occur due to normal aging. Hollywood celebrities—you know who they are—are showing plump faces and full cheeks that do not come naturally unless you are in your twenties.

When we are young our skin is smooth, naturally moisturized and highly elastic. The effect of gravity, sun exposure, smoking, daily facial contractions and chemical changes that occur in our metabolism slowly breaks down the skin's healthy structure which eventually leads to wrinkles, frown lines, saggy skin and other facial abnormalities.

Traditional treatment of these conditions has been the injection of collagen or synthetic fillers, all of which have short-lived results, and risk of an allergic reaction to the foreign material. Dr. Ramos now offers a procedure called Fat Transfer, or Fat Grafting, that adds volume to the face enhancing the cheek, chin, eyebrows, forehead and temples to create a younger look. Additionally, fat transfer has been used to correct facial irregularities without general anesthesia or major surgery.

We use Body-Jet, a water-assisted device that uses a gentle pulsing spray of water to dislodge and remove intact fat cells. Fat cells removed in this manner are more viable than cells harvested by other methods such as traditional liposuction. As an added benefit, the fat is usually harvested from patients' abdomen, love handles or hips. The cells are then transferred to the face as hundreds of small droplets of fat. The intact fat cells are placed into areas where the aging process has caused loss of volume and wrinkles. This process is repeated until the desired amount of fat has been transferred to refine the area and create a natural youthful look.

Face lift using fat is performed in our office under local anesthesia in 1 to 2 hours. Medication to relax the patient is administered prior to the procedure. Both the donor site (area from which fat is taken) and the face are anesthetized with local anesthesia. The patient is awake and comfortable during the entire procedure and can even confer with the physician during the process.
