Cellulite is formed by fat protrusion or herniation into the dermis, causing the skin to have a bumpy and dimpled appearance, that usually appears on the thighs, hips, buttocks and abdomen. Cellulite affects 10% of men and 80% of women. The cause of cellulite is unclear, however there are multiple factors involved in the formation of cellulite such as genetics, hormones, inactivity, poor diet, pregnancy and weight gain. Although cellulite is not a serious medical condition, it is undesirable and unsightly cosmetic concern for most patients. Current treatments to reduce the appearance of cellulite include laser, radiofrequency, subcision, carboxytherapy and PDO threads.
Subcision is a minor surgical procedure that is performed using a needle or a very small knife inserted through a puncture in the skin to break apart the bands below the skin that causes cutaneous scars, wrinkles or cellulite. However, after the body heals and regenerates it self, the bands that were broken heal right up and the skin changes return afterwards in a lesser degree.
Carboxytherapy and PDO threads, this approach uses carbon dioxide gas under the skin to break apart the bands that causes cellulite. Besides, restores and recondition the skin causing new blood vessel formation and increased collagen production. The use of PDO threads following carboxytherapy adds extra benefits such as rupture of the fibrous tissue that tents and pulls down the skin, increased lipolysis or destruction of fat in the treated areas, increased microcirculation and collagen formation. Besides, PDO threads remain inside of the skin preventing the bands from mending themselves.
Lasers, different types of lasers are used to treat cellulite. A tiny laser fiber is inserted beneath your skin, then the laser is fired, the laser energy breaks up the tough band below the skin that causes cellulite. Besides, stimulates collagen formation, reduces thickness of the subcutaneous fat layer and improves skin texture and elasticity. The downtime is about 1 to 2 days and the results last about one year.
Radiofrequency devices, the energy used heats up the skin stimulating collagen and microcirculation, besides a mild fat reduction and relaxation of the fibrous bands helps to achieve a smoother, more even skin texture. This treatment is non invasive and usually requires no downtime. However, a series of treatments are recommended for optimal results. Additionally, results are temporary, so you will need to repeat treatment every few months to maintain results.
